Youth Ministry: An important book review

DJ Chuang checked out my blog a few weeks ago and left some comments and it made me start frequenting his blog more. As a product of Asian-CANADIAN youth ministry, I have to say I have always felt a strong connection to the next generation of youths at my church and other churches. It’s funny because now, more than ever, is when I’ve been hearing a lot “what’s with these youth?”, “why are these youth not interested in anything?”, “the youth aren’t connecting to the church anymore” and etc.

So with that in mind, I checked out DJ’s blog and saw a fresh new plug for a book that he edited recently called Asian American Youth Ministry. I can elaborate further on the CANADIAN and AMERICAN differences in what influences youth, especially ASIAN youth, but for now I won’t go there. What I can offer is that after helping with Korean American youth in Louisville, Kentucky, I can tell y’all that it’s way more similar than you would think.

There were some reasons why I decided to read this book AND write a review (and I’m guessing the FIRST to blog review it too ;) )

1. I respect DJ Chuang for his insights in current asian american church issues and beyond being asian as well.

2. I hope to help inform the people who are involved with youth ministry who read my blog

3. That intergenerational and cultural issues in the church interest me greatly

4. and for the glory of God!

With that in mind I should give a brief background to this book. This book was not published by a major book publishing company but from an organization called “The L2(squared) Foundation” . This group has existed to develop leadership support and resources for Asian Americans since 2001. I like to think also for Asian Canadian youth ministry as well :) Anyways, the book is based from writings and sermons from accomplished Asian American youth workers and topics include: youth ministry in an intergenerational Asian church, student leadership, and outreach. This review will be separated into chunks and I will try to be as thorough as I can be but I apologize in advance for not getting the full points out properly :p

Without further ado, here is the review:
